ELECTION VIOLENCE PREVENTION

ELECTION VIOLENCE PREVENTION

We have the power to help our communities resist and rise above political violence.

Elections can intensify risks for political and identity-based violence. By counteracting dangerous narratives, affirming democratic and nonviolent values, and coordinating responses with other leaders, we can create a society where everyone feels safe and welcome to fully participate in public life.

There are many ways to mitigate political violence.

We can work together to prevent political violence from occurring, and to respond to it in ways that strengthen our democracy when it does occur.

The below resources are organized into two categories: resources to support communities in preventing political violence, and resources to support communities in responding to instances of violence.

Prevent

Preventing political and identity-based violence requires speaking to the conditions that make violence seem permissible or necessary and providing non-violent, pro-democracy paths forward.

Respond

Responding to political and identity-based violence involves defusing tensions, building agency to take action, restoring democratic norms, and stopping cycles of violence from occurring.
